New Years Traditions...

As we prepare to welcome in the new year, we thought it would be nice to remember a few of the traditions in Britain around this time of year.

A very old custom called 'first footing' is still practised and believed by some. It is believed that the first male visitor to your house on New Year's day will bring good luck with them.

Blondes, red heads and women are not allowed to be the person who sets foot in the house first as they are apparently supposed to be bad luck! The male visitor will usually bring some money (yes please!), bread or coal with them as these are considered to be particularly auspicious gifts.

There is another tradition of gifting the holy mistletoe too. Apparently this is believed to bring prosperity for the recipient. Another well known tradition is the "burning of the bush" which symbolizes the burning of all past events in preparation for times to come.

New Year celebrations in the UK is one of the most celebrated festivals of the year! Midnight parties with fireworks, drinks, dancing and music are very much a part of the biggest night-out of the year (and we’re often charged huge prices just to walk into a bar on New Years Eve too) and I imagine many of you will be off to a party or a meal to celebrate with loved ones too.

Whatever you are doing, take a little time to remember your most treasured memories from 2010 and to look forward to 2011 with excitement and enjoy yourself! From all of us here at When I Was a Kid – HAPPY NEW YEAR!
